Your actionable Checklist for Local SEO Audit

1. Google Business Profile (GBP) Foundation

  • The Check: Is your profile claimed, verified, and categorized correctly?

  • The Task: Ensure your “Primary Category” exactly matches your core service. Fill out every field, including “Service Areas” and “Business Description” using local keywords.

2. The NAP Consistency Test

  • The Check: Is your Name, Address, and Phone number identical everywhere?

  • The Task: Audit your website, Facebook, and Yelp. A phone number listed as (123) 456-7890 in one place and 123.456.7890 in another can confuse Google’s algorithm.

3. Website “Location Page” Optimization

  • The Check: Do you have a dedicated page for your physical location?

  • The Task: Include an embedded Google Map, your local NAP, and 300-500 words of unique content about your services in that specific city.

4. Review Velocity & Sentiment

  • The Check: Have you received a new 5-star review in the last 30 days?

  • The Task: Google prioritizes “freshness.” Aim for a consistent flow of reviews. Pro Tip: Always reply to reviews (both good and bad) to signal an active, trustworthy business.

5. Local Keyword Mapping (On-Page)

  • The Check: Does your homepage Title Tag include your city?

  • The Task: Update your SEO Title Tag to: [Primary Service] in [City Name] | [Business Name]. Ensure your H1 header reflects this as well.

6. The “Big Three” Citations

  • The Check: Are you listed on the foundational aggregators?

  • The Task: Verify your presence on Data Axle, Neustar Localeze, and Foursquare. These feed data to thousands of other smaller directories.

7. Hyper-Local Schema Markup

  • The Check: Is your “LocalBusiness” structured data active?

  • The Task: Use a Schema generator to add code to your site that tells search engines exactly where you are and what you sell. This is the “secret sauce” for the Map Pack.

8. Image Geo-Tagging & Alt Text

  • The Check: Are your website images optimized for your location?

  • The Task: Rename image files from IMG_001.jpg to local-seo-agency-charlotte.jpg. Ensure the Alt Text describes the service and the area.

9. Mobile User Experience (The “Thumb Test”)

  • The Check: Can a customer call you with one click on their phone?

  • The Task: Ensure your phone number is a “click-to-call” link. Most local searches happen on mobile; if your site is slow or hard to navigate, users will bounce.

10. Local Backlink Profile

  • The Check: Do local websites link to you?

  • The Task: Reach out to local news sites, blogs, or the Chamber of Commerce. One link from a local high-school football team site is often worth more for Local SEO than a generic global link.

The Final Step: How did you score?

  • 8–10 Points: You’re a local leader! Let’s help you stay there.

  • 5–7 Points: You have “Leaky Bucket” syndrome; you’re losing leads to competitors.

  • Under 5 Points: Your business is likely invisible to 60% of your local market.
